Zest – Wednesday 20th April

Finding someone to be made over in the Press at short notice tests the full range of diplomatic skills!  How does one say it?  “Excuse me, you look like you could do with a bit of help, fancy a makeover?” is the opening line few girls want to hear.  Luckily Rebekah Smith had already faced her fears and embraced her inner Pear last week so was happy to help out.  What a good sport she is: she was happy to sport a before look that, whilst I’ve seen it around the traps often enough, is not really her style.

It was great to shift that girl out of her comfort zone of trousers and a shirt and see her embrace a more sophisticated look.  However doing a piece like that for the press can present quite a limited view also.  I would have loved to show Beks in several contrasting looks, all of which she could and should experiment with.  My look changes all the time.  There is room in my life for the bohemian, the sophisticate, the minx, the Siren (of course), streetwear, classics and edgy experimentation.  I even got the rock chick out last Friday.  I told myself there was never going to be a better time to take those leopard skin leggings for a spin than on my 46th birthday!  It felt like a risk but I got a resounding thumbs up from everyone I saw that day and felt great because of it.  I don’t think we should be confined to particular looks, so long as they are making us feel good.

Lady Crusaders Lunch

What a ride the past few months has been!  It’s been a crazy time to be a Cantabrian for sure.  It was great to get back to having some fun last month at the Lady Crusaders Lunch.  I was asked to do a short presentation to entertain our lovely guests whilst they waited for lunch to be served by the Crusaders.  Of course I use real women with real body shapes and that process is always fun… from cajoling my models into facing their fears in front of 250 women  to coordinating the right size shoes, underwear, perfect music , hair and makeup to accentuate their best features. Don’t underestimate the power of a right good dress up!

Sometimes preparing for an event can bring as much enjoyment as the event itself! Think of the classic Mother of the Bride scenario. The anticipation of a joyful and glamorous event brings a lot of satisfaction for a long time. Whereas men tend to chuck on a suit on the day and maybe clean their shoes, there is a lot of pleasure to be had from planning a great outfit.

We all need things to look forward to, it’s fantastic for our mental health. Stop looking on finding an outfit for a wedding / ball / the races as a chore and get excited! I get a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing a transition in a client needing a special outfit. To see a woman go from feeling overwhelmed with the choice, with a little focus to help her move to anticipating how cool it would feel to make a confident entrance and how much fun we can have in the process. Believe me, dressing up is not going to solve global warming, but it may just make you a sunnier person to be around!

NB: Not all Mothers of Brides are necessarily sunny, anticipation should be enjoyed with a healthy dose of realism!
